You could try taking two extra-strength Tylenol caplets, and applying pressure to the part of the face where the pain is.

First see if brushing, flossing and rinsing with salt water will work. It WILL hurt to brush and floss, but wisdom teeth often have a flap of gum, that lets foods get in. Even the tiniest piece can cause you bad pain, due to irritation. If this does not help then I would say to find a dentist.

You should find different local charities to go to.

I would say call the red cross. They may not do wisdom teeth but they can direct you to someone who may.

Also, I went to Affordable Dentures. They may have a location near you. They do more than dentures and are very cheap.

    www.affordabledentures.com

Ibprofuen is a good idea, as there is probably swelling and it has a ingredient in it that reduces swelling. But you should still get it checked, if it is not clearing up. Your wisdom tooth could be impacted or infected. If it is infected you could get an abcess, which could cause the infection to spread elsewhere and become life threatening.

Check with your local health department. Often times they will fix and pull teeth for free so long as you qualify. Even if you make more than you should the co pay is extremely small.

Dental schools also have free or low cost clinics. Talk to a local dentist about setting up a reasonable payment plan.

Find a local  free clinic( my community has a clinc called The good sameritan clinic). If you have health insurance go to your primary care physician-sometimes dental work can be covered under your regular health plan (if it is billed correctly) if all else fails go to the emergency room-A doctor will perscribe an anti iotic if needed and a pain med-ask to see a social worker while your'e there-they will help you get help for dental work  if you qualify financially

Well, in my case I have the same problem and am refusing dental treatment because I object to antibiotics that contain aspartame or are likely to make you ill anyway.

I have a cavity in a wisdom tooth that is very sensitive and I do not eat on that side now. I also have some loose teeth. The dentist I saw wanted me to have 14 extractions including all wisdom teeth and expected me to take an antibiotic containing aspartame. I refused and had to sign a waiver.

I am using colloidal silver, hydrogen peroxide and tea tree oil to keep infection and inflammation down but it is nowhere near an ideal situation and I sympathise with anyone faced with this problem.

Colloidal silver will turn your skin permanently blue if you ingest it.  Clove oil will help with the pain. Take omega 3 supplement 2000 mg a day.  That will help the most.  Brush your teeth with baking soda and rinse your mouth with salt water.

Go to your nearest Emergency Room.  This is America and no one should be turned down for medical care because they do not have the money.  Then see about getting in a lowcost insurance plan like Famis that caters to people of low incomes.

If you desire to be a leech, maybe.  I say go to the dentist and arrange payment.  The ER or any doctor gets nothing in reimbursement for treating dental pain.  If they treat you, make sure you say thanks as they are doing you a big favor.

I'm a nurse, and the emergency room is for loss of life, loss of limb only. It is not for toothaches. People abuse the ER, and the hospitals have to write off the money, because most insurances won't pay
      Shame on you

garlic oil and salt water for infection, tea bags placed on the area for pain and swelling. If the pain is bad, you can take acetaminophen or ibuprofen, but avoid this if the tea bag brings the pain to a manageable level, as any kind of medication can cause dependency.

Then save your money until you can have it removed. My father has horror stories about not having his wisdom teeth removed...essentially they rotted under the gums and spread infection to the nearby teeth, necessitating removal of nearly all the back teeth.

    Hi Solicemoon,
Well I dont know how system works in your country but if I have no money and my wisdom teeth is hurting bad, i go to government hospital where the qualified dentist would look at it and treat it in what ever way he thinks best and then give me medicine and all this is for free. Only problem in this is that Government hospitals have long lines and thus it might take couple of hours wait before you get your turn to be checked and then he might give you a next appointment which might be few weeks later but rest assured he would take care of pain then and there as much as possible.

The socialized US health care system - Medicare and Medicaid - does not pay for dental care.  Instead, they expect physicians to supply emergency care for free because they know doctors won't turn anyone away even though they don't make a cent.

It's always best to see a professional in this kind of situation. If you cannot afford it, alternative options are finding an academic dental hospital which might be able to offer the treatment for free or at a greatly reduced price. Alternatively you could ask your dentist if you could pay off for the treatment, or apply for dental financing for the treatment.

solicemoon.....This is not something I can justify "sugar-coating"... no pun intended.  I will be blunt, since I believe this is necessary.  The "mouth," by it's very nature, is a perpetually open, moist, warm environment, as well as the main ENTRANCE to the body.  Tooth pain, 96% of the time, indicates "INFECTION."
You need to know that the toxin created by these infections, fester and become worse with time, while in this oral environment......and obviously seep into the rest of our inside, spreading poison, throughout.  It is not uncommon, that people have become "septic"....and many have died from secondary infection and other issues.
If your area has colleges and/or Universities, with Medical/Dental Depts, call them to inquire as to their Dental Student programs.  Final year students, while being carefully supervised by experienced Dentists, accept patients and do not charge for this.  Also, most communities have free health clinics.
Whatever you have to do.....do it.  Please do not ignore this or attempt to "fix" yourself.

I lost much teeth nearly one-third of them and some one or two broken and  hanging since months. Once I went to dentist. He checked them and advised to get some x-ray, which I have not got till now. It is a costly affair to deal with teeth.

  16. NickSimpson profile image59

I do agree with everybody who is telling you that you need to have the tooth looked at. I imaging it will need to be extracted. I have been there too brother, there is no pain like that of an infection. From my personal experience the "only" thing that I found relief by using was clove oil. You can get it at your local Walgreens or whatever you have CVS and the likes.

Its simple, put it on a cotton swap, rub it on the tooth and surrounding gums. Go ahead and hang your head over a sink, because your gonna be salivating a considerable amount and you don't really want to swallow it. I assure you that this will help, but most likely you will be right back in the pain you started in if you don't get it taken care of soon. I don't know what dentist cost around you, but in central Illinois, you can usually get a tooth pulled for about $150 - $200 dollars as long as you don't have to go to an oral surgeon.

Good luck and hope that helps,

    Nick

It sounds like you really need to see a dentist. I know right now I need a mouth piece but also cannot afford a dentist. There are free clinics in every state where dentists work, and they can help you. I have a hub on "help for the needy" that points you to a few websites that may have that information, or ask your local churches, DRS, or unemployment office if they know of online resources or companies you could go to in order to get a list of free medical clinics. Sniff around, and you can find one. I know some churches around here that have medical staff who work for free like one day a week. You don't even have to be a church member. Good luck! ~Michele

I don't pay extra for dental insurance with my Medicare because the things that I need done are NOT covered, and it's a very high deductible rate just for routine stuff and it cost $40/month. Not worth the policy.

My gold cap fell off. Don't use the 'temp dent' for $3 at the Pharmacy store. I bought the liquid permanent stuff that dentists use from Ebay  for $6 and put it back on myself months ago without a problem since.

You can go to the dentist, and explain your situation.  They may treat you and write you off if they are a good dentist.  Otherwise, you can try to open a carecredit card, which they usually have the application for at the dentist.  They will put your visit on the card and then you can finance paying off your debt.  Here is the link for you to check it out: http://www.carecredit.com.  Good luck.  Dentists visits can be so very expensive, but often times, the longer you wait on a problem, the worse and more expensive it may become to fix.

I agree with previous posters who say that somehow you must get to see a qualified dentist, otherwise you well end up losing a tooth. Teaching hospitals usually have some free appointments so that their students can practice (under close supervision).

For short term pain relief you could try oil of cloves or bite on a whole clove. Cloves have an anesthetic effect and thus give pain relief.

The Social Welfare Board in my town has a dental clinic.  You must qualify based on any income you receive.  If accepted, there are 2 days a week that they accept emergency walk-ins based on a first-come first -served basis.  The cost is $10 which is definitely more affordable for those with little income.

A while back my son had a problem with his wisdom tooth and it looked and was painful. He went to the dentist she did a root canal cleaned and  I made my own remedy to kill the bacteria. Add some garlic spice, Listerine,  black pepper and salt with luke warm water he gargled twice and kept the liquid on the area around the tooth for few minutes this helped tremendously. The tooth and gums looked sore and was told he would need to operate in order to remove the tooth but all is well now and he does not need  to have it removed. The first and only visit to the dentist was for free.

fresh garlic pod peeled & whole....preferably organic & bite down on it to release juice. keep in place several minutes & repeat as needed. Burns & little but that's probably the pain relief properties being released.  This has worked for me in the past. Garlic has many uses for a healthy body & knowing this, I had an idea to try this & it worked!  This can possible keep the pain away until you can get the professional treatment you need.

I have recently experienced an abcessed tooth which of course means it's infected. Naturally the pain was terrible. Since I didn't have dental coverage or any funds to see a dentist I do have health insurance and a prescription drug plan. Due to the pain and concern of the infection spreading, I did an emergency visit to my Dr. and he prescribed Amoxicillin to treat the infection and a  Lortabs generic to treat the pain. Of course he strongly recommended that I see a dentist which I would have done originally  if I could have afforded it to begin with. This obviously is only a short term solution as the problem will return at some point in the future as the tooth must be extracted or a root canal procedure and capping to really solve the problem but will be expensive as well.

The ancient Ayurvedic technique of Oil Pulling - there are tons of testimonials on the Internet about its efficacy. I have tried it and continue. I prevented a root canal and also saved a sensitive tooth doomed by the dentist. A tablespoon of gingelly, refined sunflower or organic coconut oil - swish around in the mouth around teeth and gums for 20 minutes preferably first thing in the mornings. Don't allow oil to get anywhere near your tonsil area as the oil will be toxic. After spitting it out (it will be frothy), brush teeth and gargle with warm water and rinse brush in hot water. My tooth infection that had warranted a root canal disappeared in about a week. I'm sure it will help your dental troubles.

I had this happen some years ago and visited the county health dept. Although they had no one available to work on teeth, I was able to see a doctor that gave me an antibiotic and some extra strength Ibuprofen. If you have a county health dept. in your area, I'd suggest you go in and ask for some help. In the meantime, I'd recommend rinsing the area with Listerine. The components in Listerine will help sterilize the infection; just be sure to swish and spit gently.

Look on the shelf next to the tooth paste and Dental Hygeine products.  Get some "ABersol" for aching teeth and gums.  Try not to eat hard foods that will make it hurt worse, eat a little softer foods.. You know what foods you can tolerate.  After you finish eating, when you are at home, its a little easier. Rinse your mouth real good with clear water, then a little peroxide in a little water, rise again, there may be a little of discomfort of white foaming, wait a few mintues rinse again.  Soft brush with very little pressure on your wisdom, and after the last rinsing, then apply a little "Abersol".   Follow the directions on the bottle label.  Hope that will help for awhile until you can see a Dentist.

  41. profile image53

As others have stated, you "HAVE" to eventually see a dentist.  Also as stated, look for local dental schools.

That said, you can see your doctor, however, I recently learned that your doctor IS NOT REIMBURSED FOR "ANY" DENTAL CARE.  When you see your doctor, they are simply doing you a favor and giving you "free care".  The government run health care Medicare and Medicaid have decided this.  Most commercial insurance have followed suit as well.

So, next time you go see your doctor for dental pain.  Say "thank you" and don't complain about their being late.  They just did you a favor and treated your dental problem for free.

I say this because my doctor provided me with antibiotics, then injected me with an oral nerve block to rid the pain, gave me pain medicine, and then provided me with a list of free dentist in the area.

Just though you should all like to hear how our wonderful government is with managing our health care.  This is just a start of more to come.  Don't be surprised if your doctors refuses dental treatments in the future.  Who can blame them for not wanting to work for free.

You can call the Dental Association in your state for low cost or free clinics. The dental school may have a long waiting list but is worth a try. If anyone has an Indian card, the Indian clinic is usually free. Children on Medicaid may have free care. I looked up low cost or free dental care in my city on  Iphone and found about fifteen places. Some clinics are under auspices of churches, and others are clinics for low income patients. Dentists volunteer once monthly for one of the clinics. I live in Oklahoma City, but if you live in or near a large city, they are worth a try. Good luck. I hate to hear about people with no care who just take antibiotics.

First find out if your tooth has a cavity and is in danger of rotting.

If it is an issue of the tooth coming in wrong, it can cause your other teeth to become misaligned as it forces it way in.

If it is just an issue of pain - you might try Oil of Clove as a pain reliever.

If you have other issues regarding infections in teeth and gums you might want to try the herb  - 'horse tail'.  My brother has had serious issues that the dentist has suggested that they pull all his teeth - and by ongoing use of the herb 'horse tail', he has kept his teeth and not had to have them pulled.
